Francis Wainwright (1664–1711) was an important leader, businessman, and soldier from Ipswich, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard College in 1686. He is best known for leading soldiers during a big battle in 1707.

Early Life and Family

Francis Wainwright's father, also named Francis, moved to Ipswich from England. His father was a brave soldier. He fought in the Pequot War and was known for his courage. Later, he became a successful and respected businessman. This background likely influenced young Francis.

Serving His Community

From a young age, Francis Wainwright joined the local militia. He worked his way up through the ranks. Eventually, he became a colonel, a high-ranking military officer.

He held many important jobs in his community. He was a judge in the General Sessions Court. He also served as the town clerk, helping to manage town records. He was a representative in the Massachusetts General Court for several years. This meant he helped make laws for the colony.

Wainwright also helped collect taxes as a commissioner. He was a member of the Artillery Company. This was a special group for military officers.

Leading Soldiers at Port Royal

In 1707, Francis Wainwright commanded a group of soldiers from Massachusetts Bay. They were part of an important military mission. Their goal was to capture Port Royal, a town in what is now Nova Scotia, Canada. This event is known as the expedition to Port Royal 1707.

The first attempt to take the town was not successful. The leader, Colonel John March, stepped down. Francis Wainwright was then chosen to take command of the entire mission.

Under his leadership, the soldiers tried a second time to capture Port Royal. However, this attempt also failed. People in Massachusetts were very upset about the failure. Some even sent angry letters to the leaders, calling them cowards.

Later Life and Passing

Francis Wainwright was planning to get married again. His wedding to Eliza Hirst of Salem was set for July 31, 1711. Sadly, he became sick just two days before, on July 29.

He passed away on August 3, 1711, at his home. His bride-to-be stayed by his side until the end. Colonel Wainwright left a large amount of money to his son, Francis. His son also inherited land in Ipswich through his mother's family.
