Early Life and Education

Francisco Antonio Pérez Salas was born in Santiago in 1764. His parents were José Pérez García and Ana Josefa Ramirez de Salas y Pavón. He studied law. This means he learned about laws and how the legal system works. He became a lawyer in Chile when it was still a Spanish colony.

Leading Chile's Government

Pérez Salas was a key figure during Chile's fight for independence. This was a time when Chile wanted to become its own country. It wanted to be free from Spanish rule.

On April 13, 1813, a new group was formed to govern Chile. This group was called the Government Junta. Francisco Antonio Pérez Salas was a member of this group. Other members included Agustín Eyzaguirre and José Miguel Infante.

Pérez Salas became the president of this Junta. He led the government from April 13 to August 23, 1813. He continued to be a member of the Junta until October 9 of that year. He also helped start the National Library of Chile. This library is a very important place for books and knowledge in Chile.

Challenges and Later Years

During a time when Spain tried to take back control of Chile, called the "Spanish Reconquista," Pérez Salas faced difficulties. He was arrested and sent to prison. His prison was on Juan Fernández Island.

However, he was set free after the Battle of Chacabuco. This was a major battle that helped Chile win its independence. After his release, Pérez Salas continued to serve his country. He became a member of the Justice Chamber. This group helped make sure laws were fair. Later, he became the leader of this chamber.

In 1822, he was chosen to be a Senator. A Senator is a person who helps make laws for the country. Francisco Antonio Pérez Salas passed away in Santiago in 1828.
