About Francisco Coloane

Francisco Coloane was born in Quemchi, a town on Chiloé Island in southern Chile. He started his writing career in 1935 with a book called Perros, Caballos y Hombres (which means "Dogs, Horses and Men"). He kept writing for many years, publishing his memories in a book called Los Pasos del Hombre (The Steps of Man) in 2000.

Many of his most famous books have been translated into languages like English, French, and German. Some of these include:

  • La Tierra del Fuego se Apagó (Tierra del Fuego Has Burnt Out, 1945)
  • Golfo de Penas (Gulf of Sorrow, 1957)
  • El Camino de la Ballena (The Whale's Path, 1962)

Coloane received the Premio Nacional de Literatura (Chilean National Prize for Literature) in 1964. This is a very important award for writers in Chile. In 1997, he also received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) from France. This award recognized his important work, which became very popular in France during the 1990s.

Francisco Coloane loved nature. He was also a member of the Communist Party of Chile for most of his life. He even celebrated his 89th birthday by swimming in the very cold waters of the Pacific Ocean! He believed this helped him stay "vital and active."

A movie called Tierra del fuego, directed by Miguel Littín, is based on one of Coloane's works. After he passed away, the Chilean government recognized him as a very important writer of the 20th century in Chile.
