The Life of Francisco Gutiérrez Arribas
Early Life and Training
Francisco Gutiérrez Arribas started his career creating religious art. These early works were mostly statues of saints. In 1741, he moved to Madrid. There, he learned a lot in the workshops of Luis Salvador Carmona, a famous sculptor.
To improve his skills even more, Francisco traveled to Rome. He studied at the Accademia di San Luca. In Rome, he saw many ancient Classical artworks. This experience helped him develop his own unique style. He learned to create large, impressive sculptures.
Important Works in Madrid
Francisco returned to Madrid in 1761. After that, he focused on creating non-religious art. One of his most famous works is the statue of Cybele. This statue is part of the beautiful Fountain of Cybele in the Plaza de Cibeles.
He also made many figures for the Puerta de San Vicente and the Puerta de Alcalá. On the Puerta de Alcalá, he carved a shield. This shield showed the coat-of-arms of the Borbons, the royal family of Spain.
Francisco also helped create the special monument for King Ferdinand VI of Spain after he passed away. For the church of the Salesians, he made statues representing "Abundance," "Justice," and "Time." He also added some decorative putti, which are small, chubby figures often seen in art.
Becoming a Professor and Director
Francisco Gutiérrez Arribas became a Professor. He taught at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. He was also named a court sculptor, meaning he worked for the royal family. In 1765, he became the Director of the Academia. This happened when his mentor, Luis Salvador Carmona, had to leave the position.
