Francisco Jareño y Alarcón (born February 24, 1818 – died October 8, 1892) was a Spanish architect. He designed many important buildings, including one of the most famous government buildings during the time of Queen Isabella II.

Francisco Jareño y Alarcón was born in Albacete, Spain, on February 24, 1818. When he was young, he studied to become a priest for nine years.

In 1833, he decided to change his path. He joined the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. This is a famous art school. He finished his studies there in 1848, when he was 30 years old. He was a very good student.

His Travels and Learning

Francisco received a special scholarship. This allowed him to travel around Europe for four years. He visited many different countries. During his travels, he learned how iron was used in buildings. This was a new and exciting idea in architecture at the time.

After his first trip, he received more money from the Spanish government. He used this to travel to England and Germany again. He wanted to learn even more about architecture.

In 1855, he came back to Madrid. He became a professor at the Special School of Architecture. He taught students about the history of art.

Important Roles

Francisco Jareño y Alarcón held many important positions. From 1874 to 1875, he was the director of the School of Architects. He also became a permanent member of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1867. He received several important awards for his work. These included the Knight of the Royal and Distinguished Order of Carlos III in 1858. He also received the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of María Victoria in 1872.

  • Cardenal Cisneros Secondary School (1877): He added an extension to this school building.
  • Court of Auditors (Spain) (1860): This building has been changed and added to over the years.
  • Hospital del Niño Jesús (1879): This children's hospital was built for the Duchess of Santoña. It received a lot of praise from around the world.
  • First Kindergarten in Spain (1879): This was the first school for very young children in Spain. It was located near the Normal School of Teachers.
