Francisco Zumel, by Francisco de Zurbarán

Francisco Zumel (c. 1540-1607) was an important Spanish thinker and church leader. He became the main leader of the Mercedarian Order, which was a religious group. He also taught science and how to live a good life at the famous University of Salamanca in Spain.

Zumel followed the ideas of a very old and respected thinker named Thomas Aquinas. He is best known for writing strong arguments against a group called the molinistas, who were followers of Luis Molina. Zumel and Molina had different ideas about how God's plan and human free will work together.

He wrote his books in Latin. Some of his writings are still kept safe in the Vatican Library and have not been published for everyone to read yet.
