Francisco de Borbón y Escasany was born in Madrid, Spain. He was the oldest child of Francisco de Borbón y Borbón. His grandmother was Enriqueta de Borbón y Parade, who was the 4th Duchess of Seville. His mother was Enriqueta Escasany y Miquel.
His family, the House of Bourbon, is a very old and important European royal family. Francisco was related to King Felipe VI of Spain. Both of them are descendants of King Charles IV of Spain.
Becoming the Duke of Seville
Francisco inherited the title of Duke of Seville after his grandmother, Enriqueta de Borbón y Parade, passed away. This happened in 1968. His father had decided not to take the title himself, so it passed directly to Francisco.
Family Life and Children
Francisco de Borbón y Escasany was married three times.
First Marriage
On July 7, 1973, he married Countess Beatrice Wilhelmine Paula von Hardenberg in Germany. They had three children together:
- Olivia Enriqueta María Josefa de Borbón y Hardenberg (born 1974) is an entrepreneur. She works in public relations for jewelry brands. Olivia is married to Julián Porras-Figueroa y Toledano, and they have two children.
- Cristina Elena de Borbón y Hardenberg (1975–2020) was a chef. She also ran a catering service.
- Francisco de Paula Joaquín de Borbón y Hardenberg (born 1979) is an entrepreneur. He even appeared on a TV show called Secret Princes. In 2018, he became the 50th Grand Master of the Order of Saint Lazarus. He married Sophie Elizabeth Karoly in 2021, and they have a son named Francisco Máximo.
Francisco and Countess Beatrice divorced in 1989.
Later Marriages
He married Isabelle Eugénie Karanitsch in 1991. They did not have any children together and divorced in 1993.
His third marriage was to María de los Ángeles de Vargas-Zúñiga y Juanes in 2000. They also did not have children together.
Role in the Order of Saint Lazarus


The Order of Saint Lazarus is a very old organization. It is known for its charitable work.
Francisco de Borbón y Escasany was chosen as the 48th Grand Master of the Order of Saint Lazarus. This happened on October 5, 1996, in Milan, Italy. He took over this important role from his father, who had been the Grand Master since 1956.
He stepped down from his position as Grand Master in 2008. His cousin, Carlos Gereda y de Borbón, became the next Grand Master. After retiring, Francisco was given the special title of Grand Master Emeritus.
Later, in 2018, Francisco's son, Francisco de Borbón y Hardenberg, was elected as the 50th Grand Master of the Order.
Honors and Recognitions
Throughout his life, Francisco de Borbón y Escasany received several honors:
