Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Francisco de Burgos Mantilla (born around 1609 or 1612 – died April 1, 1672) was a Spanish artist from the Baroque period. He was known for painting portraits (pictures of people) and still lifes (pictures of objects like fruit or flowers).

Early Life and Training

Francisco de Burgos Mantilla was born in a city called Burgos in Spain. However, from 1618 onwards, he lived in Madrid, which is the capital of Spain. This is where he began his art education.

He first trained with an artist named Pedro de las Cuevas. Later, in 1624, he became a student of the very famous Spanish painter, Diego Velázquez. Velázquez was one of the most important artists of the Baroque era.

His Artworks

During his lifetime, Francisco de Burgos Mantilla was most famous for his portraits. Sadly, none of these portraits are known to exist today. They have all been lost over time.

The only painting by Burgos Mantilla that we know of today is called Still Life with Dried Fruit. He painted this in 1631. This painting is now kept at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, in the United States.

Still Life with Dried Fruit

This painting is a small example of a type of art called a bodegón. A bodegón is a Spanish term for a still life painting, often showing pantry items, food, or kitchen scenes.

Still Life with Dried Fruit uses soft, quiet colors and looks very natural. It reminds art experts of the work of Italian artists who followed the style of Caravaggio. These artists were known for their realistic paintings and strong use of light and shadow. Burgos Mantilla's style in this painting is also very similar to that of his teacher, Velázquez.

Later Life and Death

Francisco de Burgos Mantilla continued to live and work in Madrid. He passed away there in 1672.
