Life and Work of Francisco de Comontes
Francisco de Comontes followed in his father's footsteps. His father, Iñigo de Comontes, was also a painter. In 1533, his father worked on the main retablo (a large, decorated altarpiece) for the Chapel of Los Reyes Nuevos. This chapel is inside the famous Toledo Cathedral. His father followed designs made by Felipe de Vigarny.
Becoming a Cathedral Painter
Francisco de Comontes became well-known for his own artistic skills. Between 1545 and 1547, he painted portraits for the cathedral's winter chapter room. These portraits included important church leaders like Cardinal Archbishop Tavera and Archbishop Siliceo.
In 1547, Francisco de Comontes received a special job. He was named the official painter for the Toledo Cathedral. This was a very important position. He kept this job until he passed away in 1565.
His Best Known Artworks
Some of Francisco de Comontes's most famous paintings are on wooden panels. These include artworks titled 'Virgin and St. Bartholomew.' These paintings were placed in 1659 in a retablo that he himself had gilded (covered with a thin layer of gold). This retablo is located in the chapel of the Tower within the Toledo Cathedral. These works are often seen as his best artistic achievements.
