Juan Pardo de Tavera was born on May 16, 1472, in Toro, Zamora, Spain. His parents were Ares Pardo and Guiomar Tavera. His uncle, Diego Deza, was a very important person in his life. Diego Deza helped and guided him throughout his career.

Juan studied at the University of Salamanca. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1500. In 1505, he received a special law degree called a Licentiate of Canon Law. That same year, he became the head of the university, known as the rector.

Rising Through the Church

In 1505, his uncle helped him become a member of the cathedral chapter at Seville Cathedral. This was an important group of clergy who managed the cathedral. In 1506, Ferdinand II of Aragon, the King of Spain, appointed him as an auditor for the Spanish Inquisition. This meant he helped oversee the legal processes of the Inquisition.

Juan Pardo de Tavera became the Bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo on July 14, 1514. Later that year, he was officially made a bishop. He also worked as a diplomat. Cardinal Adrian of Utrecht asked him to help arrange important royal marriages. He helped negotiate the marriage of Charles I of Spain to Isabella of Portugal. He also helped with the marriage of John III of Portugal to Catherine of Castile.

In 1523, he moved to become the Bishop of Osma. The next year, in 1524, he was promoted again. He became the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela.

Important Political Roles

Juan Pardo de Tavera also held significant political power. In 1524, he became the president of the Royal Council. This was a very powerful position in the government of Spain. He held this role for fifteen years.

During his time as president, he led several important meetings called the Cortes Generales. These meetings were like parliaments where important decisions for the country were made. He presided over the Cortes held in Toledo (1525), Valladolid (1527), Madrid (1528), Valladolid (1537), and Toledo (1538).

Becoming a Cardinal and Grand Inquisitor

On April 27, 1534, he was transferred to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toledo. This made him the Primate of Spain, which is the highest church leader in the country.

After the death of Isabella of Portugal in 1539, Charles V appointed Juan Pardo de Tavera as the regent of Castile. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is away or too young. He held this important role until 1541.
