Early Life and Career
Francisco de Enciso Zárate was born in Logroño, a city in Spain. His family was once important, but they had lost much of their wealth.
He worked as a secretary for Don Pedro Álvarez Osorio, who was a Marquess (a type of noble leader) in Astorga. This job was like being a personal assistant to an important person.
His Famous Books
In 1532, while living in Valladolid, Francisco de Enciso Zárate published the first part of his big adventure story, Florambel de Lucea. This book was a "chivalric romance," which means it was a tale about brave knights, their adventures, and often, their love stories.
The second part of Florambel de Lucea came out later, in 1548, in Seville. He also finished writing a third part the next year, but it was never printed as a book.
Connection to Don Quixote
Francisco de Enciso Zárate's adventure stories were very popular at the time. They were similar to the types of books that Miguel de Cervantes made fun of in his famous novel, Don Quijote de la mancha. Cervantes' book was a parody, meaning it made fun of the exaggerated adventures and heroes found in chivalric romances.
Other Possible Writings
Some people think that Francisco de Enciso Zárate might have also written another anonymous romance called Platir. This book was first published in Valladolid in 1533.
Later Life
Francisco de Enciso Zárate passed away in 1570.
