Dom Francisco de Melo (1597 – 18 December 1651) was an important Portuguese nobleman. He became a Spanish general during the Thirty Years' War. This was a big war that happened in Europe.

Life and Early Career
Francisco de Melo was born in Estremoz, a town in Portugal. He started his career in politics and diplomacy. From 1632 to 1636, he worked as the Spanish ambassador. An ambassador is like a country's representative in another country. He was sent to the Republic of Genoa.
Important Roles and Missions
In 1638, Francisco got a very important job. He was made the viceroy of Sicily. A viceroy is someone who rules a country or region as the king's representative. Two years later, he became an ambassador again. This time, he went to Vienna. He also worked as an assistant to a powerful leader named Marquess of Leganés.
Military Achievements and Challenges
Francisco de Melo had a lot of experience when he arrived in the Southern Netherlands. This area is now parts of Belgium and the Netherlands. From 1641 to 1644, he was the temporary governor there. A governor is in charge of a region.
Key Battles and Victories
He led Spanish forces in several important battles. In May 1642, he won a big victory. His army defeated Antoine III de Gramont at the Battle of Honnecourt. This showed his skill as a military leader.
Challenges and Later Life
However, not all battles were victories. Francisco de Melo's forces were defeated at the Battle of Rocroi in 1643. This was a major loss. After this, in August 1644, he went back to Spain. Philip IV of Spain, the king, gave him new roles. He became part of the council of state. He also worked as a royal military adviser. This meant he gave advice to the king about military matters.
