Francisco de Toledo (born October 4, 1532, in Cordoba, Castille – died September 14, 1596, in Rome) was an important Spanish Jesuit priest. He was also a theologian, which means he studied religious beliefs. He taught at the Roman College and was known for explaining the Bible. He was the very first Jesuit to become a cardinal in 1593.

Early Life and Education
Francisco de Toledo began his studies with a teacher named Domingo de Soto. He became a professor of philosophy at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He taught there from 1555 to 1559.
Joining the Jesuits and Teaching in Rome
In 1556, Toledo became a priest in Salamanca. Two years later, in 1558, he joined the Jesuit order. This is a group of Catholic priests and brothers. After a short training period, he was called to Rome.
The leader of the Jesuits, Diego Láynez, needed good teachers for the new Roman College. Toledo was a great fit. He taught Philosophy from 1559 to 1562. Then, he taught Moral Theology from 1562 to 1569. He also helped manage the studies at this fast-growing university.
Important Works and Contributions
In the 1570s, Francisco de Toledo wrote many books. These books were commentaries, which means they explained the works of the ancient Greek thinker Aristotle.
He also led the work on the Clementine Vulgate. This was a very important revised version of the Latin Vulgate Bible. It was published in 1598. This new version was based on an earlier text approved by Pope Sixtus V.
Later Life and Legacy
Francisco de Toledo passed away in 1596. He was buried in the Santa Maria Maggiore church in Rome. His tomb monument was created in 1598 by a sculptor named Gillis van den Vliete. The design for the monument was made by Giacomo della Porta.
Toledo wrote many books during his life. These books covered different topics. Some were about philosophy, like his "Introductio in dialecticam Aristotelis." Others were about theology, such as "Summa casuum sive instructio sacerdotum." He also wrote books that explained parts of the Bible, like his "In sacrosanctum Joannis Evangelium commentarium."
