Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Frank S. Cherry (born around 1875, died 1963) started and led one of the first Hebrew Israelite groups in the United States. These groups believe that African Americans are the true descendants of the ancient Israelites.

Frank S. Cherry's Life

Not much is known about Frank S. Cherry's early life. We do know he was born in the Southern United States. He did not attend school but taught himself Hebrew and Yiddish.

Cherry worked as a sailor for some time. He claimed that during his travels, he was declared a prophet. He was also a high-ranking member of a group called the Scottish Rite Masons. He was also part of the Big Brothers organization.

His Teachings and Church

Cherry believed that African Americans were the descendants of the ancient Israelites. He said he had a special vision about this while he was traveling.

In 1886, he started a church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He taught that God, Jesus, Adam, and Eve were Black. He also preached some controversial ideas about race.

Later, in 1915, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There, he started another church called the Church of God. His group became known as the Church of the Living God, the Pillar Ground of Truth for All Nations.

This group supported Black Nationalism, which is a movement that promotes the unity and self-determination of Black people. They also supported Marcus Garvey, a leader who worked for Black empowerment.

Cherry also taught some unusual ideas. He believed that the Earth was square, not round. He also said that Jesus would return in the year 2000. He thought this return would lead to a big conflict.

After Frank S. Cherry passed away, his son, Prince Benjamin F. Cherry, took over as the leader of the church.

A writer named Shais Rishon, who is a Black Orthodox Jew, has said that Cherry was a Southern Baptist. He stated that Cherry never joined or converted to any branch of Judaism.
