He became part of the 40th New Jersey Infantry. This unit was officially formed in February 1865. Frank finished his service with them in July 1865.

Frank Emil Fesq showed incredible courage during the Civil War. His brave actions took place during the Third Battle of Petersburg. This important battle happened on April 2, 1865.
