The Frank Pierce Carpenter House is a special old building located at 1800 Elm Street in Manchester, New Hampshire. It was built in 1891 for Frank Carpenter, who was the president of a big paper company called Amoskeag Paper Company. This house is a great example of the fancy Queen Anne style of building.

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. For about 71 years, starting around World War II, it was home to the local group of the American Red Cross. Today, it's a private office building. It's also known as the Carpenter Historic Building, LLC. They recently won an award for fixing up the old Carriage House on the property. This building is a cool spot for visitors to Manchester and is part of local history tours. You can even see it during working hours!

What Does the Carpenter House Look Like?

The Frank Pierce Carpenter House is just north of downtown Manchester. It sits at the corner of Elm Street (U.S. Route 3) and North Street. The house is mostly square-shaped. It has a tall, round tower, called a turret, at its front-right corner. There's also a window area that sticks out on the front-left side.

A smaller, two-and-a-half story part of the house, called an ell, extends to the back. This part used to hold service rooms. The front of the house has three main sections. The turret takes up the left section, and the main door is in the middle. A porch with columns covers the entrance. Inside, the house is very fancy with old wood designs and marble from other countries.

The Story of Frank Carpenter and His Home

This beautiful house was built in 1891 for Frank Carpenter. He was the head of the Amoskeag Paper Company. Frank Carpenter was also a very generous person who helped the city of Manchester a lot.

It's thought that Edgar A. P. Newcomb designed the house. Carpenter had also hired Newcomb to design the city's Carpenter Memorial Library. After Frank Carpenter passed away in 1938, parts of his large property around the house were sold.

During World War II, the house was temporarily used by the Red Cross. After the war, this arrangement became permanent. In 1993, Carpenter's family officially gave the property to the Red Cross. They made sure the house would be protected and preserved for the future.
