The Frank R. Lillie House is a special old house in Chicago, Illinois. It's located on the campus of the University of Chicago. Built in 1904, this house was once the home of Frank R. Lillie. He was a very important scientist who studied how living things develop from tiny beginnings. He also helped a lot with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, a famous ocean research center. Because of its history, the house was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Today, the university uses it for offices.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Frank R. Lillie House is in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. It stands on the east side of the University of Chicago campus. The house is a three-story building made of brick. It was designed by the architects Pond and Pond in 1904.

Unique Design Features

The house has a unique and interesting look. It features flat surfaces with special diamond-shaped brick patterns. The corners of the house have unusually shaped brick blocks called quoins. The roof also has different styles in various parts. Even though the inside is now used for university offices, many of its original details are still there.

Who Was Frank R. Lillie?

Frank R. Lillie (1870–1947) was a very important scientist. He was born in Toronto, Canada. He studied at the University of Toronto and then at the University of Chicago. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1894 with the highest honors.

Lillie's Scientific Discoveries

From early on, Frank Lillie was very interested in embryology. This is the study of how living things grow and develop from a single cell. At the time, this field of science was quite new. Lillie made some amazing discoveries. For example, he found out that certain hormones in an embryo's blood determine its sex. This discovery was a big step forward. It helped create a new field of study called endocrinology, which focuses on hormones and glands.

Helping Science Grow

Lillie was also very active in supporting science organizations. He helped get a lot of money for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. This is a major center for ocean research. Lillie had spent a summer there as a student. Thanks to his efforts, the institute grew into a very important place for scientific research.

The House Today

Frank Lillie gave his house to the University of Chicago in his will. However, his wife was allowed to live there for the rest of her life. The university officially took over the building in 1957. Since then, it has been used for many different purposes. Currently, it houses the offices for the Chicago Review, a literary magazine.
