Early Life and Education
Francis Renouf was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on July 31, 1918. He went to Wellington College for his schooling. Later, he studied at Victoria University of Wellington, where he earned a degree in Commerce in 1940.
During World War II, Francis Renouf served as a captain in the New Zealand army. He was captured in Greece in April 1941. He spent four years as a prisoner of war in Germany. After the war, he received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study at Worcester College at Oxford University in England from 1947 to 1949.
Francis Renouf was also a talented tennis player. He played for New Zealand Universities between 1938 and 1940. He also played for Oxford University, earning a special award called an Oxford Blue in tennis in 1948 and 1949.
Business Achievements
Starting in 1950, Francis Renouf became a partner in a stockbroking company in Wellington. This company was first called Daysh, Renouf & Co. He brought new ideas to New Zealand's financial world.
He was the first to introduce unit trusts to New Zealand. These are like special funds where many people put their money together to invest. He also started New Zealand's first merchant bank, called the New Zealand United Corporation. A merchant bank helps businesses with big financial deals.
In 1957, he created the first share index for New Zealand. This index helped people track how well the stock market was doing. He also started the first company that focused on listed property. His company, Renouf & Co, also helped other companies raise money by selling shares.
Supporting His Community
Francis Renouf was very active in supporting sports and arts. He was the president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association from 1985 to 1986. He loved tennis and helped set up the International Club of New Zealand. The Renouf Tennis Centre in Wellington is named after him because of his support.
He also helped fund many other projects in Wellington. These included the Michael Fowler Centre, Downstage Theatre, and the Wellington Cathedral. He also supported the Renouf Sports Centre at Wellington College.
In 1987, Francis Renouf was made a Knight Bachelor. This is a special honour given for his generous support of many good causes. In 1997, he was recognised for his business success. He was added to the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame.

Sir Francis Renouf passed away in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1998. He was 80 years old.
