  • Dick Howser Trophy (1991)

Frank Rodriguez, born on December 11, 1972, is an American former professional baseball player. He was a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB).

College Baseball Star

Frank Rodriguez won a very special award in 1991 called the Dick Howser Trophy. This award is given to the best college baseball player in the entire country each year. It's like the Heisman Trophy, but for baseball!

When he won, Frank was playing for Howard Junior College in Texas. He was an amazing player for the Howard College Hawks. He played both shortstop and pitcher. Frank even helped his team win the National Junior College World Series Championship in 1991. What's even cooler is that no other junior college player has won the Dick Howser Trophy since him!

Playing Professional Baseball

Starting with the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox picked Frank Rodriguez in the 1990 baseball draft. At first, they drafted him to play shortstop. He started his professional journey with the Elmira Pioneers.

Later, when he played for the Lynchburg Red Sox, the team realized he was an even better pitcher. So, Frank switched from playing shortstop to focusing on pitching. He made his first appearance in Major League Baseball for the Red Sox on April 26, 1995.

Moving to Other Teams

Soon after his debut, Frank was traded to the Minnesota Twins. He played for the Twins for over three years. After that, he joined the Seattle Mariners in 1999 and played with them until the end of 2000.

His last stop in the major leagues was with the Cincinnati Reds in 2001. After that season, he didn't pitch in the MLB again.

Career Stats

During his time in Major League Baseball, Frank Rodriguez had a career record of 29 wins and 39 losses. His Earned run average (ERA) was 5.53. The ERA shows how many runs a pitcher allows per game.

In 2008, Frank returned to professional baseball for a short time. He played for the Newark Bears in the Atlantic League.

Coaching Young Players

As of 2021, Frank Rodriguez is still involved in baseball. He is an assistant coach for the baseball team at SUNY Maritime College. This college is located in the Bronx, New York. He also coaches pitchers at Mercy University.
