Becoming a Baseball Star
Winning a Top College Award
Frank Rodriguez was a very talented baseball player in college. In 1991, he won the Dick Howser Trophy. This award is like the Heisman Trophy for college football, but it's for the best college baseball player in the country.
At that time, Rodriguez played for Howard Junior College in Big Spring, Texas. He was an amazing shortstop and pitcher for his team, the Howard College Hawks. He helped them win the 1991 National Junior College World Series Championship. No other junior college player has won the Dick Howser Trophy since him.
Playing Professional Baseball
Starting His MLB Journey
The Boston Red Sox picked Frank Rodriguez in the 1990 amateur draft. He was first drafted as a shortstop. A few weeks into the 1991 season, he joined the Class A-Short Season Elmira Pioneers.
When he moved up to Class A with the Lynchburg Red Sox, the team realized he was even better as a pitcher. So, he started playing that position. He made his first appearance in Major League Baseball for the Red Sox on April 26, 1995.
Moving Between Teams
Soon after his debut, Rodriguez was traded to the Minnesota Twins. He played for the Twins for over three years. In May 1999, the Seattle Mariners picked him up. He played for the Mariners until the end of the 2000 season.
His last time playing in the major leagues was in 2001 for the Cincinnati Reds. After that, he did not pitch in the MLB again. He finished his MLB career with 29 wins and 39 losses. His ERA was 5.53, which measures how many runs a pitcher allows per game.
In 2008, he returned to professional baseball for a short time. He played for the Newark Bears in the Atlantic League.
Coaching Baseball Teams
After his playing career, Frank Rodriguez became a baseball coach. As of 2021, he was an assistant coach for the baseball team at SUNY Maritime College. This college is located in the Bronx, New York. He has also been a pitching coach for Mercy University.
