Education and Early Life
Frank Smith went to Bournemouth Grammar School when he was younger. Later, he studied at the famous University of Oxford. There, he earned two important degrees. First, he got a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Then, in 1972, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree. A DPhil is like the highest degree you can get, showing you are an expert in your field.
Career and Research
Professor Smith is well-known for his work in fluid mechanics. This science helps us understand how things like water flowing in a river or air moving around an airplane behave. He helped create something called "triple-deck theory." This theory helps scientists understand how fluids move, especially near surfaces.
He also led the Lighthill Institute of Mathematical Sciences (LIMS) for a time. Professor Smith has taught many students who went on to become successful scientists themselves. He guided ten students to get their PhDs, including the famous mathematician Hannah Fry.
