History of Franklin
The town of Franklin was created in November 1854. It was formed from a part of another town called Honey Creek. Later, in September 1858, the town of Bear Creek was also formed from the western part of Franklin.
Town Hall Building
In 1899, a special building was constructed for the town hall. Two builders, Rob and Albert Nachreiner, built it. This building was located in Plain, Wisconsin. It replaced an older shop that made wagons.
The upper part of the new town hall was used for town meetings and activities. Downstairs, in the basement, there was a small jail room and a fire station. This fire station was used by the nearby Village of Plain.
On top of the town hall, there was an alarm bell. This bell was later moved to the front of the new fire station around 1980.
After the original town hall building was no longer used by the town, a group called the Old Franklin Township Historical Society (OFTHS) was started in 2004. This group began using the old town hall building. They stored old items, family histories, and artifacts from the Plain and Franklin areas in their museum.
How Franklin Got Its Name
People believe the town of Franklin might have been named by some of the first settlers. These settlers, named Cramer, used to live in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Another idea is that the town was named after Benjamin Franklin, a famous American inventor and statesman.
