The name Franklin Furnace comes from an old iron furnace built in eastern Scioto County in 1826. This furnace was used to melt iron ore to make iron. The community that grew up around it took its name from this important furnace. The name "Franklin" itself comes from the famous American inventor and statesman, Benjamin Franklin.
This area is part of a special piece of land called the French Grant. This land was given by the United States Congress in 1795 to a group of French colonists.
