The Franklin Inn is a very old building located in East Millstone, New Jersey. It was built in 1752 by Cornelius Van Liew. You can find it at 2371 Amwell Road (Route 514). This historic place has been known by many names. It started as the Van Liew family farmhouse. Later, it became a popular tavern and inn called the Franklin House Hotel. Because of its long and interesting history, the Franklin Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 17, 1983. It is an important part of the East Millstone Historic District.
A Look Back in Time
The Franklin Inn has a rich past. Cornelius Van Liew, who built the house, married Antje Bowman in 1757. They lived there with their children. The house stayed in the Van Liew family for many years.
Revolutionary War Days
A very exciting time for the Franklin Inn was during the American Revolutionary War. In June 1777, a famous British general named Charles Cornwallis took over the house. He used it as his headquarters for five days! Thousands of British soldiers set up camp nearby. This area is now Colonial Park Arboretum and Gardens. Other important generals, like William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe, were in nearby towns. During the war, American generals also used the house. They held important meetings there to plan their strategies.
From Home to Inn
The Van Liew family owned the house until 1822. Then, it was sold to John Wyckoff. Mr. Wyckoff rented out the property. In 1829, it started being used as a tavern. This was a busy time for the area. The Delaware and Raritan Canal opened nearby in 1834. This canal helped transport goods and people. The tavern was a popular stop for travelers and workers.
Modern Times
The tavern at the Franklin Inn closed in 1916. This happened because of a time called Prohibition. During Prohibition, it was against the law to sell alcohol. After that, the building had a new life. The Meadows Foundation used it as a used book store. However, in 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused a lot of flooding. The building was damaged and had to close its doors.
