Sir François Langelier was an important Canadian figure. He was a lawyer, a professor, a journalist, and an author. He also held many important political jobs. He was even the tenth Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. François Langelier was born on December 24, 1838, in Sainte-Rosalie, which was then called Lower Canada. He passed away on February 8, 1915, in Sillery, Quebec.

Early Life and Career

François Langelier studied at two famous universities. He went to Université Laval in Quebec. He also studied at the Université de Paris in France. After his studies, he became a lawyer. He also worked as a professor and a journalist.

A Career in Politics

François Langelier was a member of the Liberal Party. He tried to get elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in 1871 but did not win. However, he was elected in 1873 for the area of Montmagny. He lost his seat in 1875 but was elected again in 1878 for Portneuf.

Important Roles He Held

From 1878 to 1879, François Langelier had two big jobs. He was the Commissioner of Crown Lands. He was also the Provincial Treasurer. These roles involved managing public land and money.

He was also very active in his hometown, Quebec City. From 1880 to 1890, he was a city councillor. He even served as the mayor of Quebec City from 1882 to 1890.

Serving in the Canadian Parliament

François Langelier also served in the House of Commons of Canada. This is part of Canada's federal government. He was first elected in 1884 for Mégantic. He was re-elected several times for Quebec-Centre. He served in Parliament until 1898. He left Parliament to become a judge in Montreal.

Later Life and Honors

François Langelier received many special honors. In 1907, he was "knighted," which means he received the title of "Sir." This is a very high honor from the British Crown. In 1909, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society of Canada. This group recognizes important Canadian scholars and artists. He also became a knight of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1913.
