Freckle Juice (ISBN: 0-440-42813-0) is a children's chapter book written by Judy Blume in 1971. Sonia O. Lisker created the illustrations for the book. This story is about a second grade student named Andrew Marcus who really wants to have freckles.

What is Freckle Juice About?

Andrew's Wish for Freckles

Andrew Marcus is a second-grader who wishes he had freckles. He wants them just like his classmate, Nicky Lane. Andrew thinks that if he had freckles, his mom might not notice when his neck is dirty. Nicky Lane has many freckles, maybe even millions! Andrew tries to count them, but his teacher, Mrs. Kelly, reminds him to pay attention in class.

The Freckle Juice Recipe

Andrew decides he needs freckles. He buys a special recipe from another classmate, Sharon. She sells him a recipe for something called "freckle juice." It's supposed to give him freckles, but it's actually a fake potion.

The recipe for this "freckle juice" includes:

Sharon tells Andrew that the faster he drinks it, the more freckles he will get.

Andrew Tries the Potion

Andrew tries to make and drink the freckle juice at home. But instead of getting freckles, his face turns a greenish color, and he feels very sick. His mother thinks he might have appendicitis, a serious stomach problem.

Mrs. Marcus goes to call the doctor. However, she sees the messy kitchen and finds the instructions for the "magic potion." She realizes the freckle juice didn't give Andrew freckles; it just made him sick. Andrew's mom scolds him for trying to make potions. She was very scared that he was seriously ill.

Andrew Returns to School

Andrew misses one day of school because he is sick. The next day, he feels better. On the following school morning, his mom makes sure he gets ready for school. She sings a "good morning" song and reminds him to wash behind his neck and ears.

Andrew tries to pretend he is still sick so he doesn't have to go to school. But his mom is serious. She tells him that she works during the day and cannot stay home to watch him. She gives him a choice: get ready before she counts to fifteen, or he will have to take three baths a day for a very long time! Andrew decides to get ready quickly. He gets dressed and eats his breakfast.

Fake Freckles and a "Magic" Solution

When Andrew is well enough to go back to school, he tries another way to get freckles. He draws fake freckles on his face with a blue magic marker. But he soon wishes he hadn't.

Luckily, his teacher, Miss Kelly, helps him out. She gives him a "magic freckle remover" to take off the marker freckles. It turns out to be just soap and water. Interestingly, the classmate Andrew admired, Nicky Lane, also asks for the "freckle remover." This makes Sharon, the girl who sold Andrew the recipe, try to sell Nicky a new potion: "freckle-removing juice."
