Frederick Arthur Round Emney (born February 12, 1900 – died December 25, 1980) was a well-known English character actor and comedian. He was famous for playing funny, often grumpy, characters in movies and on television.
Emney was born in Prescot, Lancashire, England. His father, also named Fred Emney, was a popular entertainer in music halls. Music halls were like variety shows that were very popular a long time ago. Fred Emney Jr. grew up in London and went to Cranleigh School. His great-uncle, Arthur Williams, was also an actor. Fred's sister, Joan Emney, was an actress too. Sometimes, they even performed together on stage.

Fred Emney's Acting Career
Fred Emney started acting in films in 1935. Before that, he performed in music halls, just like his father. He quickly became a familiar face to movie audiences. He often played a "posh fat bloke," which means a fancy, well-fed man. These characters were usually a bit gruff and almost always wore a monocle, which is a single eyeglass.
Television and Music
During the 1950s, Fred Emney had his very own television show. This show featured funny skits and clever piano pieces. Fred often wrote these piano tunes himself. Some of his musical performances were even released on records. For a short time, he also worked with puppets named Pinky and Perky, acting as their "straight man." A straight man is someone who sets up jokes for a comedian or, in this case, puppets.
Later Life and Legacy
Fred Emney continued to act in many films throughout his career. He was known for his unique style and memorable characters. He passed away in Bognor Regis, Sussex, England, on Christmas Day in 1980.
