During World War I, Fred McNess was a lance-sergeant. This is a type of leader in the army. He was part of the 1st Battalion of the Scots Guards. He showed amazing bravery during a very important battle.

The Battle of Ginchy

On September 15, 1916, Fred McNess was fighting near a place called Ginchy in France. This was during the First Battle of the Somme, which was a very tough fight. There was heavy shelling and machine-gun fire all around.

Bravery Under Fire

Lance-Sergeant McNess led his soldiers forward with great courage. They faced a lot of enemy fire. When they reached the first enemy trenches, they found danger. The enemy was throwing bombs from one side. McNess quickly took charge. He organized his men and led a counter-attack. Even though he was badly hurt in his neck and jaw, he kept going. He set up a "block" to stop the enemy. He kept encouraging his men and throwing bombs. He only stopped when he was too weak from losing blood.

Later Life and Legacy

After the war, Fred McNess was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He lived with serious injuries from the war. These injuries caused him pain for the rest of his life. Today, his Victoria Cross medal is on display. You can see it at The Guards Regimental Headquarters in Wellington Barracks in London. It reminds everyone of his amazing courage.
