Frederick "Freddie" Douglas Waits (born April 27, 1943 – died November 18, 1989) was a very talented American jazz drummer. He was known for his amazing skills in different styles of jazz, like hard bop and post-bop.
Freddie Waits never released his own albums as a band leader. However, he was a very important member and composer in Max Roach's famous M'Boom percussion group. He also worked as a "sideman" (a musician who plays with other artists) for many great pianists. These included McCoy Tyner, Kenny Barron, Andrew Hill, Gene Harris, Billy Taylor, and Joe Zawinul.
In 1967, Freddie Waits recorded music with the trumpet player Freddie Hubbard. He was also part of the last band of the famous trumpet player Lee Morgan. This group ended when Morgan passed away in 1972.
In the late 1970s, Waits helped create a group called Colloquium III. He formed this group with two other drummers, Horace Arnold and Billy Hart. Later, in the 1980s, he became a music teacher at Rutgers University. Freddie Waits sadly passed away in New York in 1989. His son, Nasheet Waits, also became a drummer.
