Frederic Adrian Delano II (born September 10, 1863 – died March 28, 1953) was an important American leader. He was known for his work with railroads. He also served as the very first Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve from 1914 to 1916. After that, he continued to be a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors until 1918. The Federal Reserve helps manage the money and banks in the United States.

Early Life and Family

Frederic Delano was born in Hong Kong on September 10, 1863. He was part of the well-known Delano family. His parents were Warren Delano Jr. and Catherine Robbins Lyman. He had a brother named Warren Delano IV and a sister named Sara Ann Delano. His sister Sara was the mother of future U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This made Frederic Delano President Roosevelt's uncle!

Like his older brother Warren, Frederic went to Harvard University. He graduated from Harvard in 1885.

A Career in Railroads

After finishing college, Delano started working for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. He began as a civil engineer. This means he helped design and build things like tracks and bridges. He worked his way up to become a general manager in Chicago.

For a while, he also advised the United States Department of War about railroads in the Philippines. In 1905, he became the president of several railroad companies. These included the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad and the Wabash Railroad.

In 1911, he helped manage the Wabash Railroad when it faced financial problems. Then, in 1913, he was chosen to be the president of the Monon Railroad.

Public Service and Impact

Frederic Delano was not only a railroad expert. He also served the public in important ways. He was the chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission. This group helps plan and develop the nation's capital, Washington DC. He played a role in approving and overseeing the building of the Pentagon. The Pentagon is a very large building that serves as the headquarters for the U.S. Department of Defense.

He was also involved in planning for the future of cities. Delano was the chairman of the Committee on the Regional Plan for New York and Its Environs. This committee released a big plan for the New York area in 1929.

His work with the Commercial Club of Chicago was also very important. This club helped shape the development of Chicago in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many people believe his ideas influenced his nephew, President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Family Life

In 1888, Frederic Delano married Matilda Anne Peasley (1867–1953). They had five daughters together:

  • Catherine Lyman Delano (1889–1951), who married Alexander Galt Grant.
  • Louise Delano (1891–1923), who married Sherwood Cheney. He was a leader at the U.S. Army Engineer School.

  • Matilda Delano (1899–1911), who passed away when she was young.
