He currently leads COSI (Center of Science and Industry), which is a fun science museum located in Columbus, Ohio. Before joining COSI, Dr. Bertley worked at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, where he was in charge of science and education.

Early Education and Research

Frederic Bertley studied at McGill University in Canada. In 1994, he earned his first degree, focusing on how the body works (physiology), math, and the history of science. He continued his studies at McGill and received his Ph.D. in immunology in 1999. Immunology is the study of the body's defense system against diseases. After that, in 2003, he completed a special research program at Harvard Medical School.

Career in Science and Education

After his research at Harvard, Dr. Bertley worked as a scientist at a company called Millennium Pharmaceuticals. In 2004, he joined WilmerHale LLP as a technology specialist.

In 2008, he became a leader at the Center for Innovation in Science Learning at The Franklin Institute. While there, he created an important program called the "Color of Science." This program helps highlight the achievements of women and people of color in STEM fields. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The program aims to show young people that science is for everyone. In late 2016, Dr. Bertley moved from The Franklin Institute to become the President and CEO of COSI.
