Frederick of Luxembourg (born around 1003 – died May 18, 1065) was an important noble from a powerful family. He was a younger son of Frederick, Lord of Gleiberg.
Frederick held several important roles during his life. He was a special protector, called an advocatus, for the Abbey of Stavelot-Malmedy starting in 1033. He also became the Duke of Lower Lorraine in 1046. Later, around 1060, he was also a protector for the Abbey of St Truiden. Frederick also controlled a large area that later became known as the Duchy of Limburg. His main base was a strong town called Limbourg-sur-Vesdre.
Becoming a Duke
In 1044, a powerful ruler named Gothelo I died. He was the duke of two regions called Lorraine. His oldest son, Godfrey, expected to rule both areas.
However, the Emperor Henry III decided to give only one part to Godfrey. The Emperor thought about giving the other part, Lower Lorraine, to Godfrey's younger brother, Gothelo II, who was not as capable.
Godfrey was very unhappy and rebelled against the Emperor. Because of this rebellion, Emperor Henry III chose Frederick to be the new Duke of Lower Lorraine. Frederick was a relative of the current Duke of Upper Lorraine, Adalbert.
Frederick's Time as Duke
Frederick worked with his brother, Adalbero III, who was the Bishop of Metz. Together, they tried to establish Frederick's power in the duchy. Frederick also had to fight against Godfrey, who continued to rebel.
Frederick was always loyal to the Emperor. However, he wasn't very successful in battles. Because of this, Emperor Henry III started giving parts of the duchy to other, more skilled fighters.
Frederick died while fighting against Anno II, who was the Archbishop of Cologne. After Frederick's death, King Henry IV gave the duchy of Lower Lorraine to Godfrey.
His Family Life
Frederick was married twice. His first wife was Gerberga, who died around 1049. She was the daughter of Eustace I, Count of Boulogne. Frederick and Gerberga had one daughter named Jutta. Jutta later married Waleran, who was the Count of Arlon.
Frederick's second wife was Ida. They married in 1055. Ida died in 1102. After Frederick passed away, Ida remarried Albert III, Count of Namur.
