Frederick William Jervis Goodhue (born April 26, 1867 – died December 30, 1940) was a talented rugby player from Scotland. He played for the Scottish national team and was also a founding member of the famous Barbarians rugby team. Goodhue played for clubs like St. Thomas' and London Scottish.

About Frederick Goodhue

Frederick Goodhue was born in London, Canada West in 1867. His father was Charles Frederic Goodhue. Frederick went to school in London before moving to Scotland. There, he studied at Merchiston Castle School.

After school, he went to Caius College at Cambridge University in 1885. He finished his first degree in 1890. After leaving Cambridge, Goodhue began training to become a doctor at St Thomas' Hospital.

He later worked as a doctor at the Hospital for Women in Soho Square. He also worked at Evelina Children's Hospital. By 1898, he was working as a doctor in Watford.

Goodhue's Military Service

When World War I started in 1914, Goodhue joined the Royal Fusiliers. He was a doctor and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He went to France in 1915.

He was actually 48 years old when he joined, but he said he was only 43. In 1916, he was discharged from the army. This means he had to leave because he was considered too old for life in the trenches. He was 49 at the time.

After the war, he retired to Budleigh Salterton in Devon, England.

Goodhue's Rugby Career

Playing for University and Clubs

Frederick Goodhue first became known as a rugby player while at Cambridge University. He played for the Cambridge University team. He earned two special awards called 'Blues' for rugby in 1885 and 1886.

After university, he joined the St. Thomas' rugby team while he was studying there. He also continued to play for London Scottish. In the 1890s, he was the captain for both the Barbarians and London Scottish rugby teams.

Playing for Districts and Counties

Goodhue played for the West of Scotland District team. They played against the East of Scotland District on January 24, 1891. The West team won that game.

In 1893, he was chosen to play for the East of Scotland District in the same match. However, he could not attend.

He was excused because he was picked to play for Middlesex. This team played against Yorkshire in the 1893 English County Championship. Five Scottish players were chosen for Middlesex, including Goodhue. They all played for London Scottish. Yorkshire won that match and the championship.

Playing for Scotland

Frederick Goodhue played nine times for the Scottish national team. He played for Scotland over three seasons, from 1890 to 1892. He was also one of the first members of the famous Barbarians rugby team, which started in 1890.
