He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons for two different periods: from 1883 to 1885, and again from 1890 to 1906.

Sir Frederick Milner's Early Life and Family

Frederick Milner was born on 7 November 1849. He was the second son of William Mordaunt Edward Milner, who was the fifth Baronet. His mother was Lady Georgiana Anne Lumley. Frederick's father was also an MP for York between 1848 and 1857.

Frederick went to school at Eton, which is a famous boarding school. He then studied at Christ Church, Oxford, a college at the University of Oxford.

In 1880, Frederick became the 7th Baronet. This happened after his father and his older brother, Sir William Mordaunt Milner, passed away. His older brother had no children.

Sir Frederick Milner's Marriage and Children

In 1880, Frederick Milner married Adeline Gertrude Denison. She was the daughter of William Beckett-Denison. Sadly, Lady Milner passed away in 1902 when she was 43 years old.

Frederick and Adeline had three children together:

  • Doreen Maud Milner, born in 1886. She married Victor Alexander John Hope, who became the 2nd Marquess of Linlithgow. They had children.
  • Violet Helen Milner, born in 1883. She married Lt. Col. Edward York. They also had children.
  • Sir William Frederick Victor Mordaunt Milner, born in 1893. He became the 8th Baronet after his father's death. He did not marry and had no children.

Sir Frederick Milner lived to be 81 years old and passed away in June 1931.

Sir Frederick Milner's Political Career and Achievements

Frederick Milner began his political career by being elected as an MP for York in 1883. This happened during a special election called a by-election. However, he lost his seat in the next big election in 1885.

He returned to the House of Commons in 1890. He won another by-election, this time for the area of Bassetlaw. He held this seat for 16 years. He was an MP until he was defeated in the 1906 general election.

After 1906, Milner stopped being an MP. He had some problems with his hearing. However, he continued to work to help soldiers who had left the army. In 1900, he was made a member of the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.

Frederick Milner also held other important positions. He was a Justice of the Peace (JP) for West Riding, Yorkshire. This meant he helped with local law and order. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant for West Riding. In 1930, he received two special honors: Knight of Justice, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, and Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order.
