History of Free Union
Early Settlement and Name Changes
The area where Free Union is located was first settled in the mid-1700s. It became part of Albemarle County in 1761. The village was first called Nicksville. This name came from a blacksmith named Nick, who was a free formerly enslaved person. He opened his blacksmith shop there in the early 1800s.
When a post office was opened in 1847, it was named Free Union. This was done to avoid confusion with another post office in the county called Nixville. The name "Free Union" came from the Free Union Church. This church was built in 1837 and is still active today as the Free Union Baptist Church.
Why the Name "Free Union"?
The church was called "free" because people of all races were welcome to worship there. It was a "union" of four different Christian groups. At that time, none of these groups could afford to build their own church. So, they joined together to build one church for everyone. Even after the post office was named Free Union, the village was still often called Nixville until the early 1900s. Eventually, the post office's name became the official name for the community.
