Freeman Hankins was an important American politician and funeral director. He lived from September 30, 1917, to December 31, 1988. He served in the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 7th district from 1969 to 1988. Before that, he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for Philadelphia county from 1961 to 1968. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Freeman Hankins was born in Brunswick, Georgia. His parents were Oliver and Anna Pyles Hankins. He was an African-American man.
He went to school at Friendship School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also studied at the Selden Institute and Temple University. In 1945, he graduated from Dolan's College of Embalming.
Public Service and Career
Freeman Hankins served in the Medical Corps from 1944 to 1947. After his military service, he started a career as a funeral director.
He was also very active in politics. He served on the Democratic Committee for Philadelphia's 6th ward. Later, he became the vice-chairman of Philadelphia's Democratic Committee.
Beyond politics, he helped lead important organizations. He was a trustee for Lincoln University. He also served as a trustee for the Stephen Smith Geriatric Center, which helps older people.
Freeman Hankins passed away in 1988 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. He was buried at Fernwood Cemetery in Yeadon, Pennsylvania.
