Communities in Austin Township
Austin Township is home to several small communities. These are often called "unincorporated communities." This means they are not officially separate towns or cities. Instead, they are part of the larger township.
Austin Center
Austin Center is a community located near the middle of the township. It's found where Cumber and M-19/Ubly Roads meet. The first white settler here was Mr. Watson in 1854. Soon after, Alexander McRae arrived. His wife taught at the very first school in the area. A sawmill was built in 1868. The community was named after the township itself. The township was named for William Austin, an early pioneer who settled in the county around 1844.
Cumber
Cumber is another unincorporated community. It is located in the western part of the township. You can find it at the intersection of Cumber and Wheeler Roads. In 1869, T.M. Bradshaw opened a blacksmith shop here. A post office was set up in June 1874.
Freidberger
Freidberger (sometimes spelled Freiburgers or Freiburger) is in the central part of the township. It's located at Cumber and Freidberger Roads. A post office operated here from July 1888 to June 1906. This community was once a stop on an old stagecoach route. Later, it became a stop on the Pere Marquette Railroad. However, the town became much smaller after the railroad stopped coming through.
Tyre
Tyre is an unincorporated community in the northeast corner of the township. It's on Tyre Road near the Huron and Eastern Railway. Tyre was founded in 1857 by Alex Soule, John Getty, and others. The Soule family named it after the ancient city of Tyre in the Bible. They chose this name because the land was very stony. A post office was open here for many years, from 1863 until 1964. Tyre was also a station on the Pere Marquette Railway. At one time, it was a busy place. It had five general stores, seven doctors, and three drug stores. Its large railroad station was important for shipping crops and farm animals.
