The French Colonial Historic District is a special area in southwestern Illinois. It shows us what life was like during the 1700s. This was a time when France was exploring and settling parts of North America.

This historic district includes many important places. These sites tell the story of early French settlers. They also share the history of Native American people in the area.

Discovering the French Colonial Historic District

The French Colonial Historic District covers a large area. It stretches from Fort de Chartres to Kaskaskia Island. This region was once called the Illinois Country. It was a very important place for the French.

The district helps us understand the history of French colonization. This means when France created new settlements far from home. It shows how they lived and built communities here.

Key French Settlements

Two main forts are at the heart of this district. They are Fort de Chartres and Fort Kaskaskia. These were not just military bases. They were also busy settlements. Soldiers and settlers lived and worked there.

The original Kaskaskia village site is also part of the district. Kaskaskia was once the first capital of Illinois. The Pierre Menard House is still standing there. It is the only building left from that early capital.

The town of Prairie du Rocher is also included. It has over a dozen old French houses. One special house is a Creole House built in the poteaux-sur-sol style. This means its wooden posts stand directly on the ground. The 1735 Meilliere House is another old building there.

Native American History

The district is not just about French history. It also includes several important Native American sites. These are places where archaeologists have found clues about ancient cultures.

Some of these sites are the Modoc Rock Shelter, the Kolmer Site, the Waterman Site, and the Henke Site. These locations help us learn about the first people who lived in Illinois. They show how Native Americans lived long before the French arrived.

National Recognition

The French Colonial Historic District is very important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 3, 1974. This list recognizes places that are significant in American history. Being on this list helps protect these sites for future generations.
