The French Quarter is a special area in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's an official district recognized by the city. This unique neighborhood is located between 17th and 19th Streets (east to west) and Walnut and Sansom Streets (north to south).

The city officially named it the French Quarter in 1999. Even though it's not very well-known, it's one of the few places outside of France that has a strong French culture. The area is also connected to the lively culture of Rittenhouse Square.

History of the French Quarter

The idea for the French Quarter name came from a writer named Dan Rottenberg. He first used the term in an article in Philadelphia magazine in July 1998.

How the French Quarter Got Its Name

In 1999, the city of Philadelphia decided to officially recognize the French Quarter. This happened before a big event called the 2000 Republican National Convention in the year 2000. To mark the area, subtle orange signs saying "French Quarter" were placed below the regular green street signs.

This special name was a way to honor the French culture that has influenced Philadelphia for a long time. The idea for the district came about because three French restaurants and a creperie (a place that sells crepes) opened in the area during the 1990s. These businesses helped create a French atmosphere.

Is the French Quarter Still French?

In 2023, a news source called Billy Penn looked into the French Quarter. They found that most people living in Philadelphia didn't know about the name. They also noted that not many French-owned businesses were left in the area, except for one French hotel chain.
