Fresia is a city and a special area called a commune in Chile. It is located in the Llanquihue Province, which is part of the Los Lagos Region. Think of it like a town that also manages its own local area.
People of Fresia
In 2002, a count of people called a census showed that about 12,804 people lived in Fresia. This area covers about 1,278 square kilometers (493 square miles).
Most people in Fresia live in the countryside, in what are called rural areas. About 6,660 people (52%) lived in rural areas, while 6,144 people (48%) lived in the city, or urban areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Fresia went down a little bit.
How Fresia is Governed
Fresia is managed as a commune, which is a type of local government in Chile. It is run by a group of elected officials called a municipal council.
The main leader of the commune is called an alcalde. This person is like a mayor and is chosen directly by the people in an election every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Bernardo Espinoza Villalobos.
Fresia is also part of a larger area for national elections. It is represented in Chile's national government by members of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. These people help make laws for the whole country.
