Frieda Rebecca Hughes (born 1 April 1960) is an English-Australian artist. She is known for her paintings and poetry. Frieda has written seven books for children, four poetry collections, and one short story. Her artwork has been shown in many exhibitions.
Frieda Hughes is the daughter of two famous poets: Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. Her mother, Sylvia Plath, was an American writer who won a special award called the Pulitzer Prize. Her father, Ted Hughes, was the official poet for the United Kingdom, known as the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, from 1984 until he passed away in 1998.
Frieda Hughes's Career
Frieda Hughes studied art at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. She earned her degree in 1988.
In 2002, she received an award from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. This award was for her special project called "Forty Years."
From 2006 to 2008, Frieda wrote a weekly poetry column for The Times newspaper. In 2008, she was the main judge for the Forward Prizes for Poetry. She also helped judge the National Poetry Competition that same year.
In 2010, she was a guest on a BBC Radio 3 show called Private Passions. On this show, people talk about their lives and favorite music.
In 2015, Frieda spoke publicly for the first time about her father, Ted Hughes. This was for a BBC Two TV show called Ted Hughes: Stronger Than Death.
In 2023, she appeared on the BBC Radio 4 show Saturday Live. She talked about her book George, which is about a baby magpie she rescued.
Family and Personal Life
Frieda Hughes was born in London. Her parents were the famous poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. Her mother was an American writer, and her father was the British Poet Laureate.
Through her father's family, Frieda and her brother Nicholas are related to Nicholas Ferrar (1592–1637). In 1988, Frieda moved to Perth, Western Australia. Later, in 1991, she settled in Wooroloo, a small town near Perth. The beautiful Australian landscape became a big inspiration for her paintings. She became a dual citizen of Australia in 1992.
Frieda has been married. She has no children. She loves to rescue and care for owls, and she often paints them.
Currently, Frieda Hughes lives in Wales, near a place called Abermule in Powys.
