Friedburginsel (which means Friedburg Island) is a cool island in Antarctica. It's partly covered in ice and is about 1.66 kilometers (about a mile) long. It's also 653 meters (about half a mile) wide. This island is part of a group called the Vedel Islands. These islands are found within the Wilhelm Archipelago in the Antarctic Peninsula region. Friedburginsel is a small island, covering about 51.14 hectares. No one lives there!
Who Discovered Friedburginsel?
The first information about Friedburginsel was shared by August Petermann in 1875. The island itself was found by a German team exploring Antarctica. This team was led by Eduard Dallmann during their trip in 1873-1874.
Where is Friedburginsel Located?
Friedburginsel is located at 65 degrees, 7 minutes, 35 seconds South and 64 degrees, 12 minutes, 40 seconds West (65°07′35″S 64°12′40″W / 65.12639°S 64.21111°W). It is about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) west-northwest of Hovgaard Island. It's also very close to two other islands. Friedburginsel is only 105 meters northeast of Pate Island. It is also just 50 meters southeast of Kostenurka Island. British maps showed this area in 2001.
