Friedenberg is a small, unincorporated community in Perry County, Missouri, United States. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It's located within Central Township, Perry County, Missouri.
What's in a Name?
The name Friedenberg has a special meaning. When German immigrants from a region called Bavaria settled here in the 1830s, they wanted to show how much they valued peace. So, they named their new home “Friedenberg,” which means "Hill of Peace" in German.
People sometimes called Friedenberg by an old nickname, too: “Raccoon Ridge.”
A Look at Friedenberg's History
Friedenberg was founded in 1838 by a group of Lutheran immigrants from Bavaria, Germany. These families came from a part of Bavaria called Upper Franconia, with some specifically from a city near Kulmbach.
Unlike some nearby communities that were settled by other German groups, the people of Friedenberg had their own unique story. When they first arrived, they held their church services in each other's homes.
- In 1846, they built their first church. It was a simple log building located north of Cinque Hommes Creek.
- Later, from 1852 to 1885, the community worshipped at a church on Frankenberg. This spot offered a view of the Cinque Hommes Bottoms area.
- Finally, in 1885, the church moved to its current location in Friedenberg. Here, they built a sturdy brick church. This church was known as Peace Lutheran Church.
- The Peace Lutheran Church served the community for many years but eventually closed its doors in 1980.
