Louis Carl Heinrich Friedrich Paschen was a German physicist who lived from 1865 to 1947. He is well-known for his work with electricity and light. Paschen made several important discoveries that helped us understand how atoms and light behave.

He discovered the Paschen series, which are special lines of light that hydrogen atoms give off. These light lines are in the infrared part of the spectrum, which means we cannot see them with our eyes. He first saw them in 1908.

Paschen also created the Paschen curve. This curve helps explain how much voltage is needed to make an electric spark jump through gases. He also studied the Paschen-Back effect, which is a change in how light behaves when it is in a very strong magnetic field.

About Friedrich Paschen's Life

Friedrich Paschen was born in Schwerin, a city in Germany. He studied at universities in Berlin and Strassburg from 1884 to 1888. After finishing his studies, he started working as an assistant at the Academy of Münster.

Paschen became a professor at the Technical Academy of Hannover in 1893. Later, in 1901, he became a physics professor at the University of Tübingen. He was also the president of a big research institute called the Physikalisch-Technischen Reichsanstalt from 1924 to 1933.

During World War II, Paschen helped a Chinese scientist named He Zehui. She stayed at his house and he treated her like his own daughter. He also helped her meet Walther Bothe, who was a leader at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Heidelberg.

Friedrich Paschen continued to teach in Berlin until he passed away in Potsdam in 1947.
