Fritz Schnitzler's Life and Work

Early Life and Local Politics

Fritz Schnitzler was born in Ohnastetten, a small town now part of St. Johann, Germany. He studied agriculture and became an expert in farming. He also knew how to assess damage caused by wildlife.

While managing his own farm, he also worked in local government. From 1962 to 1974, he was a district councillor and deputy mayor in Ohnastetten. He also served as a lay judge in the state court in Tübingen.

After Ohnastetten joined St. Johann, he continued to serve. From 1975 to 1996, he was a local representative and a member of the councils in St. Johann.

Leading Farmers' Associations

In 1962, Schnitzler was chosen to lead the agricultural association in Reutlingen. In 1975, he combined it with the association from Münsingen. This created the larger agricultural association for the whole District of Reutlingen.

He was the chairman of this new association from 1975 to 1992. During this time, he also helped start the landholders' association of Baden-Württemberg. He became its first person to speak for farmers in the state parliament.

Schnitzler worked closely with important leaders. These included the Minister-president, Lothar Späth, and the Minister of Agriculture, Gerhard Weiser. He also worked with the Minister of the Environment, Hermann Schaufler.

Impact on Agriculture

Fritz Schnitzler was the first person to represent all farmers in the Reutlingen District. From 1992 until his death in 2011, he was the honorary chairman of the district agricultural association. He also taught at the "Swabian Farmers' School" in Bad Waldsee.

He was very important in starting the women's agricultural association of Reutlingen. He also helped create a women's choir.

Schnitzler focused his political efforts mostly on farming. He was especially interested in dairy farming and how milk was processed. He introduced new ideas that caused a lot of discussion across the country. He also started an annual meeting for the agricultural association in St. Johann on February 2nd.

Work in the Dairy Industry

Schnitzler was also a business manager in the dairy world. He was an assistant manager at the Reutlingen dairy plant. He also chaired the board of the local dairy producers' association. He continued to advise them as honorary chairman until he passed away.

He also served as chairman for both the supervisory board and the Vorstand (management board) of Südmilch AG. This was Germany's largest milk producer. After some financial difficulties in the early 1990s, he helped solve the problems. The company was later sold and became part of what is now FrieslandCampina.

Personal Life

Fritz Schnitzler and his wife, Anne-Marie, lived on a 30-hectare (about 74-acre) dairy farm in Ohnastetten. They had one son, Frank Christoph.
