Lothar Späth's Life and Career
Lothar Späth was born in Sigmaringen, a town in Germany. He became a very important person in German politics.
Leading Baden-Württemberg
From 1978 to 1991, Späth was the Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg. This is like being the governor of a state. He was the fifth person to hold this job. During this time, he also led the CDU Baden-Württemberg party in the state.
In 1984 and 1985, he was the President of the Bundesrat. The Bundesrat is a council where representatives from all German states work together.
After Politics
After leaving his political roles, Späth became a leader in the business world. He headed the Jenoptik company until 2003. This company was special because it was one of the few businesses from former Eastern Germany that succeeded in the new market economy after Germany was reunited.
Later, he became the president of the Industrie- und Handelskammer East-Thuringia in Gera. This organization helps businesses in the region.
Helping Businesses and People
Lothar Späth also worked to help companies in Germany. In 1984, he started the "Baden-Württemberg Export Foundation." Today, this foundation is called Baden-Württemberg International. Its goal is to help medium-sized companies sell their products in other countries.
He also cared about helping people. In 1989, he supported the creation of an art collection called Kinderstern. This collection featured drawings by famous artists like Sol LeWitt and Keith Haring. The money raised from this project helped children who were battling cancer. Along with Rupert Neudeck, he also supported the "German Economic Foundation for Humanitarian Help."
In September 1992, Späth was given the special title of Royal Norwegian Honorary Consul General. This role was for the regions of Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt.
From 1998 to 2001, Späth hosted a TV talk show in Germany called "Späth am Abend." Starting in 2002, he also gave weekly political comments on TV. The show's name was a clever play on words. It sounded like "Late at night" (Spät am Abend), but it also referred to his name, "Späth in the evening."
