Friele (also known as Kaffehuset Friele) is a famous Norwegian company. It makes and sells coffee. Friele is located in Midtun, a part of Bergen, Norway. It is the biggest coffee maker in Norway. Friele is now part of a larger company called JDE Peet's.

The Story of Friele

Friele started way back in 1799. A ship captain named Herman Friele (born 1763, died 1843) came to Bergen. He wanted to start a business. He bought a building and began importing goods, especially coffee.

Around the mid-1800s, more and more people started drinking coffee. This was because coffee became cheaper as more of it was grown around the world.

Herman Friele managed the company until he retired in 1835. His youngest son, Berent Friele, then took over the business.

In 1862, Berent Friele brought in two partners. They were his son, Herman Friele, and his son-in-law, Alexander B. Grieg. The company's name changed to B. Friele & Sønner.

Friele and Grieg owned the company together until 1897. Then, Grieg left the business. Berent's son, also named Berent Friele, became a partner.

In 1900, the older Herman Friele (born 1838) brought another son, Herman, into the company as a partner. The older Herman then retired. When Berent (born 1862) passed away in 1902, Herman (born 1877) became the only owner. He ran the company for many years.

Later, in 1925, Berent's son, Einar Friele, became a junior manager. Sadly, he was killed during World War II.

The Friele company was owned by the Friele family for seven generations. The last family chairman was Herman Friele. In 2013, the company was sold to DE Master Blenders 1753. This company is now known as JDE Peet's.

Friele buys its coffee beans from many different countries. Most of their beans come from Brazil and Kenya. Until the mid-1980s, Friele mostly sold coffee in Western and Northern Norway. Since then, they have expanded and now sell coffee all over the country. The current coffee plant was built in 1981.

Friele's Coffee Brands

Friele Frokost Kaffe is Friele's most popular coffee brand. It makes up about 29% of the coffee sold in Norway. Friele also has other well-known brands. These include Kronekaffe and Café Noir. When you add all of Friele's coffee brands together, they make up about 35% of the total coffee market in Norway.
