Friend, Oregon, is a small place in Wasco County, Oregon. It is an unincorporated community, which means it is not an official city with its own government. Today, Friend is mostly a ghost town. This means that most people have moved away, and only a few buildings remain. You can still find the old Friend Store, a small one-room schoolhouse, and a cemetery there.
How Friend Got Its Name
Friend was named after a man called George J. Friend. He owned land in the area. The first post office in the community opened in 1903. It was located on his homestead, which was his family's farm.
The Railroad Connection
Friend was once an important stop for the Great Southern Railroad. This railroad line was built in 1908. It connected Friend to Dufur, which then linked to The Dalles. The railroad helped people and goods travel to and from Friend.
However, the railroad service to Friend did not last forever. The train depot closed, and service ended on January 5, 1928. The entire line was completely removed in 1935. Today, it is hard to find any signs that a railroad track was ever there.
