Friendship is a small community in Allegany County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet and also a census-designated place (CDP). In 2020, about 1,085 people lived there. Friendship is the main community within the larger Town of Friendship.

Geography of Friendship

Friendship hamlet is located in the middle of its town. It is next to the Southern Tier Expressway, which is also known as Interstate 86 and New York State Route 17. A creek called Van Campen Creek also runs nearby.

The community can be reached by taking exit 29 from the expressway. State Route 275 also serves the area. Several other local roads, including County Routes 17, 20, and 31, meet in the hamlet. Friendship is also on the main railway line of the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the entire area of Friendship, which is about 7.5 square kilometers (2.89 square miles), is land. There is no water within its boundaries.

History of Friendship

Friendship used to be a village, which means it had its own local government. However, in 1977, the village decided to end its official government status. It then became a hamlet and a census-designated place.
