History of Friendship, New York

Early Settlement and Name Change

People from Europe first settled in this area around 1806. The town was originally called "Bloody Corners." This was because there were many arguments and fights, especially on weekends.

However, the people who lived there wanted a better name. They decided to call it "Friendship" to show peace and cooperation.

In the southern part of the town, there is a small community called Nile. It is thought that early settlers, many of whom were Seventh Day Baptists, chose this name.

Town Formation and Growth

The town of Friendship was officially formed in 1815. It was created from a part of the town of Caneadea. Over time, other towns were formed from parts of Friendship. These include Cuba (in 1822), Bolivar (in 1825), and a section of Wirt (in 1838).

In the 1870s, many of the original wooden buildings in Friendship village were destroyed by fires. They were later rebuilt using brick. A historic garden from 1870, called the Hyde House Garden, was moved to the Genesee Country Museum.

Two important buildings in Friendship are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized for their historical value. The Wellman House was added in 1974, and the Friendship Free Library was added in 2008.

In 2015, the town of Friendship celebrated its 200th birthday!
