Frog Island, London facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Frog Island is a special piece of land located on the north bank of the River Thames in Rainham, London. Even though it's called an island, it's actually connected to the mainland now. It's used for storing vehicles and is home to a large building that helps manage waste for East London.

A Look Back: How Frog Island Got Its Name

Before the 1900s, Frog Island was more like a true island. At high tide, the water would surround it, making it stand out from the rest of the land. It sits at the mouth of the River Ingrebourne, a river that starts in Essex. Over time, changes were made to the land, including a small hidden ditch that now separates it from the nearby industrial area.

What Happens at Frog Island Today?

Frog Island is very important for managing waste in East London.

Turning Waste into Energy

A big building on Frog Island uses a special process called mechanical biological treatment. This process helps sort and treat the waste we throw away. About half of the processed waste is turned into something called refuse-derived fuel. This fuel can then be used to create energy, which is much better than just sending all the waste to a landfill.

Recycling Materials

Besides making fuel, the treatment works also recover valuable materials. Things like metals and glass are separated from the waste. These materials can then be recycled and used again, helping to protect our planet.

Phoenix Wharf

There's also a place called Phoenix Wharf on Frog Island. This wharf has a special status, meaning it's protected for future use. It's an important spot for boats and moving goods along the River Thames.

Where is Frog Island?

Frog Island is located right where the River Ingrebourne meets the River Thames. The River Ingrebourne flows into the Thames through a special underground pipe called a culvert and a tidal gate. This area is part of the London Borough of Havering.
